Ecclesiastes 1:4
“One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh…”
Do we really know our parents? As life passes and we say goodbye to those who raised us, we discover the spiritual lessons hidden in their lives, their trials, and even their passing. My mother, Mary, entered eternity in September 2025 at nearly 98 years old. This is a tribute to her journey—and the God who carried her through it.

My Mother’s Story: Mary, Born 1927 — Died 2025
Born near Wakefield, Yorkshire, Mary excelled in school and mastered French. During WWII, she served proudly in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS). Afterward, she trained as a nurse and devoted herself to helping others.
She married, raised two sons, and built a stable and happy home. But after 19 years, her marriage collapsed suddenly—leaving her with heartbreak, uncertainty, and a new beginning at age 44.
Like many sons, I did not fully understand the pain she carried. Teenage lives focus on music, school, and dreams—not the silent burdens parents bear in the night.
God’s Grace in Difficult Years
After years of inner struggle, on a Christmas Day around 1978–79, she prayed with me to receive Jesus. Though her faith journey grew slowly, God marked her as His own.
She returned to nursing, teaching student nurses from many nations with excellence, strength, and humor. Her favorite quote was:
“We have become too lax in this country!”
She believed in diligence, respect, and responsibility—and she lived it.
Later, a wonderful man named John entered her life. He also found Christ, and together they built 21 joyful and supportive years.
God’s Intervention — Literally a Life Saved
In 2010, I felt a deep spiritual urging to call her repeatedly. Eventually, neighbors entered her home and found her on the floor after a stroke—possibly for 36 hours. The Holy Spirit saved her life that day.
Over the next decade, she endured weakness, injuries, and nursing home care. Yet she showed courage, patience, and kindness to staff and residents alike.
A Spiritually Powerful Goodbye
At her funeral, many spoke of her kindness, humor, generosity, and grit. Even the celebrant said he had never officiated a service with such spiritual power and tears.
God finished a work in her life.
Her love left a legacy.
A Son’s Reflection
No parent is perfect. My mother was strong-willed, opinionated, and often strict. But over time, grace softened her. She supported missions in India, China, and Brazil. She loved her sons faithfully.
And God sees the heart.
Hosea 6:3 — “Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord…”
One day, she will meet my father again—in forgiveness and eternal joy.
An Encouragement to You
We rarely know the battles our parents fought.
Yet God knows every victory, every tear, every hidden prayer.
Hold faith for your family.
Believe for their salvation.
Acts 16:31
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”
God’s redemptive plan stretches across entire lifetimes—and He is faithful.
