In this second installment of When God Calls People, WCF focuses on the dramatic calling of Paul the Apostle, formerly known as Saul of Tarsus. Once a fiercely zealous defender of Jewish law and a violent persecutor of Christians, Saul actively sought to imprison and execute believers, even approving the death of Saint Stephen.
Yet God saw beyond Saul’s cruelty and religious fanaticism. On the road to Damascus, Jesus Christ intervened suddenly and powerfully, confronting Saul with the truth: persecuting believers was persecuting Christ Himself. Struck blind and shaken to his core, Saul entered a three-day period of fasting and deep spiritual transformation — a true metanoia.
From that radical encounter emerged Paul the Apostle — called not by men but by divine revelation — commissioned to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. The very man who once tried to destroy the Church became one of its greatest builders, enduring persecution, suffering, imprisonment, and hardship for the sake of Christ.
This powerful testimony reminds us that no one is beyond God’s reach. The same God who transformed Saul into Paul still calls people today — often suddenly, always purposefully — inviting each of us to discover and fulfill His divine mission.
