FROM MY EARLIEST REMEMBRANCE, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INTRIGUED BY THE CONCEPT OF SPIES. I want to talk here about spies and who they are and why they are important to us as Christians.

I am sure that this attraction to spies and the concept of being a spy was part of the Lord's call to me. I spent over 14 years of my life in an underground (potentially dangerous) country where I was sharing the Gospel for Jesus.

Of course we are all aware that some spies are 'good' and others are 'bad' depending on if you are the pot calling the kettle black or the other way round. In this world spies generally still have a romantic kind of reputation due to the popularity of spy movies like James Bond 007 and many others.

My British father used to drive our family to watch the latest 007 movies in London when I was about 9-11 years of age. He drove home afterwards at a considerably greater speed than the speed he used on the way there! My dad was undoubtedly influenced by Bond’s Aston Martin and high speed escapes and chases in the movie, much to the alarm of my mother who I remember from my sleepy backseat castigating him angrily for his reckless air. A chastened father arrived home and went to bed perhaps only dreaming of such freedom and romance in his sleep!

In the Bible spies are mentioned several times and it seems God is interested in them and they can form a vital part of His plan. Moses sent 12 spies to check out the promised land before the D- Day invasion. Their report (83% and mostly negative) to their superiors and the people had a disastrous effect on the Jewish population for over 40 years.

Numbers 13:32 -- And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

And God eventually replied to their murmuring and evil report:

Numbers -- 14:27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

Numbers 14:28 -- Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:

Numbers 14:29 -- Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,

Numbers 14:30 -- Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Numbers 14:31 -- But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.

Please read all of Numbers 13 and 14 to get the full picture!

God had Joshua send two spies to Jericho to see the lie of the land before plotting its destruction through secret instructions to Joshua.

Joshua 2:1 -- And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

Jesus had a network of helpers and friends, many of whom were almost unknown and he used them at the right moment to supply a donkey, food or shelter. Jesus even knew everything people did or said before and after they did it, just like many of the prophets of the Bible. When he met Nathanael he told him he was a man without guile, which surprised Nathanael so much that he asked Jesus; 'how come you know me'? To which Jesus replied he had already seen him sitting under the fig tree. Just this word of knowledge was enough to convince Nathanael to follow him for his whole life.

Such spiritual gifts and powers are available to all of us who ask and desire this gift. I have always thought this is a tremendous tool to serve the Lord with.

John 1:45 -- Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

John 1:46 -- And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

John 1:47 -- esus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

John 1:48 -- Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

John 1:49 -- Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

John 1:50 -- Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

John 1:51 -- And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Imagine you know everything people are doing and going to do and what they are even thinking just like JESUS did and does and God himself who knows everything we think, and Elisha who also had the habit of knowing just about everything everyone was doing. So much so that the king of Syria got so upset that all his battle plans were already leaked to the enemy, and thought for sure he had a mole (spy) in his war council! No it was just the gift of knowledge and heavenly information given to Elisha. In this present world having this type of information is extremely valuable, people would pay a lot of money for it. Elisha could have been a highly paid consultant if he had wanted to be.

2 Kings 6:8 -- Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

2 Kings 6:9 -- And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.

2 Kings 6:10 -- And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.

2 Kings 6:11 -- Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?

2 Kings 6:12 -- And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

2 Kings 6:13 -- And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

2 Kings 6:14 -- Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

2 Kings 6:15 -- And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

2 Kings 6:16 -- And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

2 Kings 6:17 -- And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Governments pay millions and billions to keep their spy services going. It is true that in successful companies only until you get to certain levels of ability and power will you be entrusted with the company secrets and strategies and other information that you may be given restricted access files.

Well it shouldn’t surprise us that the Lord uses similar systems, because the secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him, (not anyone else). This is because the physical world is a manifestation of the spiritual world. The Lord knows (all) them that are His (no one else does).

‘Of that day and hour knows no one, but my father only.’

‘Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel.’

In fact we can safely say the Lord delights in secrets and puzzles and He has a lot of use for spies also.

King Herod had spies who were tracking the arrival and movements of the wise men at the birth of Christ. it was only through God's heavenly spy satellite communications systems with Joseph the father of baby Jesus and also with the wise men that avoided Jesus death shortly after his birth, this was all accomplished through dreams, but if you were not on the Lord's side in this story you would not have been able to access the dreams and heavenly spy communications systems.

Many Christians have gone to some closed-to-the-gospel foreign countries and have not been wise after they entered. One story among hundreds comes to my mind of a Korean pastor who went to China in the late 1990's. Although he knew all foreigners were not permitted by Chinese law to share the gospel he went ahead like any dedicated believer would anyway. Good for him!

He had soon started a flock of around 30 local Chinese converts who met at his home twice a week and had Bible studies under his direction. Presently the local police summoned him to the station; they informed he could not continue to spread the gospel as a foreigner in their land. Here he made a foolish mistake and denied he was doing anything of the kind. The police led him to another room where they sat him down and let him see a video of himself teaching the Word of God in his own living room! His visa was not renewed and he eventually had to leave such a wonderful mission field with his family.

Before we went to China ourselves we spent two months training in another nearby country under missionaries who had survived there for many years; we learned how to speak safely on the potentially bugged-by-the-communist government phone and send e mails and conduct Bible studies and share the Gospel without endangering ourselves unnecessarily. I am forever grateful for that time of learning and study and it has been invaluable to know how to give an answer to every man and woman I meet what I and my family are doing in China. 'The secret things belong to the Lord our God but those things which are revealed belong unto us and our children for ever.'

Deuteronomy 29:29 -- The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

What I believe the Lord has shown me, and you may be encouraged to hear, is that we are all spies in this world; we are just passing through this earthly life, seemingly controlled by men, governments, political winds and storms that blow back and forth across the waters of the world and its peoples. Governments may think they control what is happening, but in fact it’s all a part of the plan of God which will be fulfilled.

Daniel 7:2 -- Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.

Revelation 17:15 -- And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Well, we are the advance group of spies sent ahead to prepare the way for the great invasion of the coming enemy who is even at the gates, God Himself, and He is definitely the enemy to some people and nations, but He will actually be the saviour of many.

He will invade the present earth in the final end time and re-take the world by force and violence this time. We are merely his spiritual Trojan horse, doing our part to open the gates of peoples' hearts and minds so they don't get destroyed in the maelstrom that is about to be unleashed on them.

We are Spies! We are in fact the greatest spies in the history of mankind! Let us rejoice in this calling and act more like it each day, as that great Day approaches and let us do all we can to usher in the new government. 'for the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.'

Revelation 11:15 -- And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

We are privileged by God to know and understand things that the world can never understand, the heavenly things which Jesus told Nicodemus of, that if he couldn’t understand earthly things, then how was he going to understand heavenly things?

John 3:9 -- Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

John 3:10 -- Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

John 3:11 -- Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

John 3:12 -- If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Do you fully understand the Heavenly Word of God and the privy information He has for you? Are you taking enough time with Him to get it? (Prov 2:1-7) Let us lay hold on the secret things of God and continue to be the spies in this present evil world as fifth columnists of the coming heavenly-world government. Praise God!

Deuteronomy 29:29 -- The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Isaiah 45:3 -- And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

Jeremiah 23:24 -- Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Daniel 2:18 -- That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

Daniel 2:19 -- Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

Daniel 2:22 -- He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

Daniel 2:47 -- The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

Amos 3:7 -- Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

Romans 16:25 -- Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

Revelation 11:15 -- And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.
